James Haggerstone Memorial Endowment Fund
James Haggerstone was a community activist who passed away in November 2020 at the young age of sixty. A GoFundMe account raised money to establish annual bursaries for first-year, community-oriented, domestic PornÑо¿Ëùstudents in honour of James’ legacy. A substantial family donation enabled the establishment of an additional endowment fund to create support for students in perpetuity.
James Haggerstone was best known as the "gardener of Prince George." He delighted in creating guerrilla garden opportunities in the downtown area, encouraging social connections and the enjoyment of beauty. He was a brilliant individual, a quirky and generous soul. His career in data management at Northern Health spanned several decades as the world became more aware of the need for data-informed service delivery. James was incredibly proud of his work, informing health service staff and the public throughout the northern half of our province and beyond.
James strongly believed in the value of education. His volunteer experience in Sri Lanka as a young man stimulated a lifelong interest in supporting vulnerable individuals. He could often be found on the phone voluntarily helping people navigate social systems, arranging housing and employment programs. He advocated for individuals facing the justice system and provided financial supports and food to people who simply needed help. He painted bright yellow lines around cracks in the sidewalks to help his blind neighbour walk safely and helped repair community benches for the homeless people to sit on. He raised money and equipment for First Nation's hockey teams. He was a friend to those in need.
The Haggerstone Memorial Endowment Fund and the Haggerstone Memorial Annual Bursaries will serve as a continuing reminder of all the good that exists in this world, as exemplified by James Haggerstone.
Donations to the Haggerstone Memorial Endowment Fund are welcome and are tax-deductible.
